our little dog, mark, was killed by three rottweilers this morning. in our backyard, after we asked the neighbors a hundred times to fix the fence. i had to drive my dad and brother and mark and i to the vet so i saw everything and it was awful. they broke his back and he had brain damage and all his organs were displaced. we had to put him to sleep, of course.

i know he's just a dog, but it's such a senseless thing. i wish that people wouldn't have big dogs if they couldn't be responsible enough to control them.

It's been awhile but I may start using this thing again.

I'm about to cut friends list down so if you don't like me anymore, feel free to delete yourself. I know, I suck. Guess what? I like to sing along with Avril Lavigne when I'm driving by myself, too. Also I'm Godzilla. And you're Tokyo.

your joy is your sorrow unmasked
This is from 'The Prophet', by Kahlil Gibran. I was reading it when the cloudburst came and wanted to share.

"Then a woman said, Speak to us of joy and sorrow.
    And he answered:
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears.
And how else can it be?
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.

Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater."
But I say unto you, they are inseperable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed."

I am having a bit of a rough time of it.
I'm not feeling very well for a lot of the time and I wish that wouldn't happen this time of year.
I'm doing the thing where I feel obligated to do things with my friends and then I dread doing them for weeks.

Elizabeth if you do not come over here so we can practice the christmas musical I am going to leave you to your own devices on it . . . that's not a threat because I know you're perfectly capable of doing it yourself, it's just a precaution for my sanity.

I just want to stay home . . . make a fire . . . get my head organized . . . and talk to my husband. That's what I want to do from now until January.

    Stupid question
I realize this is a ridiculous question but I've been googling all day trying to find it.
You know that thing where you sign up with a farm and they bring you a big bag of fruit and vegetables? Once a month or week or something? What is that called? I really want to find one around here but without knowing the term to look up it's difficult.
    Thanks!

Last night we went to go see RENT.
Aaron really, REALLY didn't like it. I appreciate that he took me anyway.
I don't see why it's been getting such awful reviews. What were people expecting? I think it was a pretty good representation of the story. Maybe the people who didn't like it wouldn't have liked the musical either. They're saying that the lyrics are cheesy. I guess they missed the memo that that's what makes the thing funny. It's a cheesy, Rogers & Hammerstein-style musical about transvestites and squatters.
Rosario Dawson did a GREAT job as Mimi. I think the Mimi/Roger story was the highlight of the whole thing.
    My only gripes:
They cut Christmas Bells. Why? That theme showed Larson's composing ability the best, I think.
    Maureen is funny-looking.
    Spoilers . . .

    Thanksgiving cooking, Day 2
Plum streusel pie. No one else has ever even tried it at Thanksgiving, I don't think, but I really like it. It's one of my favorites.

    .

Dutch apple pie. Not for Thanksgiving, Aaron asked that it all be for him. Notice missing piece. Also, hands down, best one I've ever made. SUPER flaky crust, and a new secret ingredient.

    .

    .

Sweet potato rolls, JUST out of the oven now. Taste tested, okay. Not spectacular. Vastly improved over other attempts at rolls and biscuits, though.

    .

And, my veggies all ready to be roasted tomorrow. They'll get EVOO, salt, and pepper.

    .

So everything I made came out well! The rolls not as well as I'd have liked, but not bad. Hope all goes well with cutting the candy tomorrow. :)

    Thanksgiving cooking, Day 1
Happy baking season! You know what that means . . . from now until December 26, ranting and raving about what I've cooked/what I plan to cook is to be expected and excused.
Here we go. First of all, today my dishwasher broke. (Actually that was last night). They came out and fixed it, during the process my hot water went out. I actually had to boil water on the stove to wash dishes with. And cook around maintenance men. Anyway, I got a whole brand new dishwasher! Yay!
Still put me off schedule though.

    I did it.
I have never cooked a whole bird before in my life. The giblets creep me out and I didn't know quite what to do with one. I attempted some Cornish game hens, which failed miserably, and once before a butterflied chicken, which I cut down the sternum instead of the backbone and ended up crying when it came out burnt on the outside, raw on the inside. However, the parade of turkeys coming through the food network this week gave me hope. Armed with an article from digsmagazine.com, when I went to the grocery store for Thanksgiving stuff today, I came back armed with a chicken. I stuffed it with lemon and garlic, put butter and rosemary under and over the skin, and made this happen:

I am so proud of myself. It was delicious. I tried to pull of a drumstick for Aaron and the bone slid right out, it was so tender. Maybe next week we'll further push the envelope and try a pot roast.
